Running vs Cycling: Which Burns More Calories?

The honest answer is: running, by a meaningful margin, for the same duration. But that single fact is the least useful part of this comparison โ€” what matters more is why, and what it means for which one you should actually be doing.

The direct comparison

Running is weight-bearing and involves lifting your entire body mass against gravity with every stride. Cycling is supported by the bike, so a large share of your body weight is not part of the exercise cost. For the same perceived effort and the same duration, running consistently produces a higher MET value than cycling.

Across comparable effort levels, running burns roughly 20 to 30 percent more calories than cycling for the same time spent. This gap narrows at very high cycling intensities โ€” competitive cyclists working near threshold produce MET values that approach hard running.

Why the gap exists

The physics is straightforward. Running requires repeatedly decelerating and re-accelerating your entire body mass with each stride, and a portion of that energy goes into vertical displacement โ€” you lift your center of mass slightly with every step. Cycling eliminates both costs. The bike carries your weight, and the pedaling motion is smooth and continuous rather than a series of small impacts.

This is also why running has a reputation as more demanding on the body โ€” the same mechanism that raises calorie cost also raises impact forces on joints, which is the flip side of this comparison.

Distance changes the comparison entirely

Everything above assumes matched time. Match distance instead and the picture flips. A person typically covers 3 to 4 times the distance cycling compared to running in the same duration, because cycling is mechanically far more efficient at converting effort into speed.

Run 10 km and you might take 60 minutes, burning around 700 kcal. Cycle 10 km at a moderate pace and it might take 25 minutes, burning perhaps 230 kcal. Per kilometre, running burns roughly three times more than cycling โ€” but per hour available for exercise, the outcome depends entirely on which one you actually have time to do more of.

The practical version

If your constraint is time, running burns more per minute. If your constraint is joint tolerance and you can ride for much longer, cycling can match or exceed running's total calorie output simply through greater volume.

Impact: the factor calorie counts ignore

A pure calories-per-minute comparison misses what is, for many people, the deciding factor. Running is a repeated-impact activity โ€” each foot strike transmits force through the ankle, knee, and hip roughly 2 to 3 times body weight. Over a 5K run, that is more than 2,500 impacts per leg.

Cycling removes this almost entirely. This is precisely why cycling is a standard rehabilitation activity after running injuries, and why many runners cross-train on a bike during high-mileage training blocks โ€” it allows cardiovascular work without adding to accumulated impact load.

If you are managing joint pain, returning from injury, carrying significant excess weight, or simply prioritising long-term joint health, the calorie advantage of running may not be worth the added impact cost.

Which builds more fitness?

Both improve cardiovascular fitness meaningfully, and the differences are more about specificity than superiority. Running produces greater bone density benefits, since bone responds to impact loading โ€” a genuine advantage for long-term skeletal health, particularly relevant as people age. Cycling allows for higher sustained power output and longer training sessions with lower fatigue accumulation, since the muscular and impact cost per minute is lower.

For general cardiovascular health and calorie burn, either is effective. Bone density benefits favour running. Joint-friendly volume favours cycling.

Combining both

Many experienced endurance athletes use both deliberately rather than picking one. A common structure: run 3 to 4 times a week for the bone density and running-specific fitness, and cycle 1 to 2 times a week as lower-impact aerobic volume that would be harder to accumulate through running alone without injury risk.
